About CAFAE
CAFAE is dedicated to education, advocacy, and policy change on college campuses.
Key initiatives include:
-
Food Allergy Education Tables: We've taught over 1,000 students how to recognize anaphylaxis and use epinephrine auto-injectors.
-
Peer Dialogues: CAFAE hosts open conversations where students share experiences, offer advice, and build a supportive network.
-
Policy Advocacy: CAFAE is working to improve campus dining options by promoting food allergy-friendly policies at Northwestern.
With plans to expand to other campuses nationwide, CAFAE continues to empower students with food allergies, ensuring they feel safe, supported, and included in college life.

How We Started
The College Advocates for Food Allergy Awareness and Education (CAFAE) was founded to support students with food allergies and improve their college experience.
While working on a college-focused project at the Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research (CFAAR), we discovered that students with food allergies often face heightened social and emotional anxiety during their transition to college due to the fear of an allergic reaction.
Our research revealed that increased food allergy education and dedicated support groups could significantly improve these students' well-being. Inspired by this, CAFAE was presented at the 2022 Food Allergy Conference for Education and Science (FACES) Innovations Showcase and established at Northwestern University in the Fall of 2022.
